Unit 6

Donation Piece
1. Wedge clay, make into a sphere, then form into a pinch pot. Use a metal rib to smooth the sides.
2. Score and slip on a circle shape as a foot, using a loop tool to thin the bottom.
3. From a slab, cut out a shape for the horse head. Then, cut out four organic cloud shapes for the manes and tails. Lastly, cut out two small rectangles to be the carousel pole. Score and slip these to the top edge of the bowl.
4. Use a loop tool to add depth to the mane and tail.
5. Fire, glaze, then fire again at cone 05-06.
Reflection: This is my favorite piece I've made all semester, I'm really proud of it. (I was going to go back and buy it, but someone got to it before me). I'm proud of how smooth the sculpting came out, my pinch pots normally have all sorts of weird little boogers. I am really happy that the slab parts I added held together, since I was scared they would be too fragile. The colors came out very nice and I think it is accurate to the cover of Catcher in the Rye, which it was based on.

Whimsical House
1. Wedge clay, then flatten with the slab roller. Cut into a rectangle, cutting five triangles to serve as walls.
2. Score and slip the walls to the floor, using a sponge for support.
3. Bevel the front wall so that the roof can sit slanted, then score on a flat piece to the back for the rest of the roof.
4. Score and slip on the windows, using a loop tool to form the frame.
5. Score and slip on little squares for the roof tiles.
Reflection:
This was based on the house from House of Leaves. The side walls were meant to be glazed with text from the books, and then the inside would appear bigger than the actual exterior facade of the house, representing how the house in the book is bigger on the inside than the outside. I was going to glaze it, but I ran out of time this semester. Since I am taking Ceramics 2 next year, I will probably try again, and I will measure my walls more since I just eyeballed these.
